    A Wendy Parkyn Watercolour Workshop

    'Moorland, Buildings, Trees'

    Wendy started with a demonstration of different techniques using one large piece of NOT Watercolour Paper divided into 6 squares with each containing a different technique and example.

     
    NB ~ NOT watercolour paper means not hot pressed, and semi-rough, 140lb weight; can use smooth or rough as well, depends on personal preference.  Watercolour paper doesn’t age well due to the sizing liquid on it, if it is old it will deteriorate and affect your painting.  Although Wendy prefers smooth paper you can’t do dry brush technique on smooth paper as there is no texture!  Keep handling of paper minimal as grease from hands will affect paper.  Apparently, there is a subtle difference between the front and back of the paper, the front being slightly more convex!
     

    Wendy demonstrates on a watercolour pad of paper, just taping the open edge to stop it curling.   The techniques demonstrated on the paper consisted of the following:

    A Tree      Clump of Trees     Boulders      Tors/Rocks      Distance     Objects

     

    Wendy prefers to use paints in pans for speed and ease and mainly uses square brushes, although some techniques do require a ‘pointy’ brush, also she prefers nylon to sable.   A disposable palette is also one of her preferences which can be used for both watercolour and acrylic.

    NB ~  Paint colours used were:  perelyene green, cadmium yellow, lemon yellow, gamboge, raw umber, alizarin crimson, cobalt blue  (black and yellow make a dark green)

    TREES – Using a ‘small pointy brush’ paint upwards from the ‘ground’ which means trunk is thickest part becoming thinner as brush makes branches.

    If painting a winter tree without leaves, use a dry brush technique, brush on side, rubbing onto paper to give appearance of small branches and twigs in neutral colour and same technique only with green paint for spring/summer, red/brown for autumn.

    CLUMPS OF TREES – same type of brush, if in distance a more blue/green colour with no detail, if in middle distance then stronger shade, minimal detail, in foreground stronger colour and added detail. By dropping a watery yellow into the tops of trees it will dribble down and give a good effect of the foliage.

    NB ~  With a painting knife you can scrape off paint to get branch/trunk details, need to assess right moment. 
    If using warm colours in the distance need to be kept paler, if dark in background keep dark but no texture and more blue.

    CLUMPS OF TREES – same type of brush, if in distance a more blue/green colour with no detail, if in middle distance then stronger shade, minimal detail, in foreground stronger colour and added detail.  By dropping a watery yellow into the tops of trees it will dribble down and give a good effect of the foliage.

    BOULDERS – Paynes grey, darker for shadow side, flick with plain water or pale yellowy water when paint is just turning ‘matt’ but not dry or too wet.  This will give a mottled granite type effect.

    TOR – in distance, paint in dark (blue and raw umber), using painting knife scrap down to give rock effects.  Can use fine point brush to paint in dark crevices afterwards.

     

    MAIN RULES ARE:

    Distance in colour, cool at the back and warm at the front.
    Detail at the front of the painting
    Size – smaller in the distance bigger in the foreground, eg sheep
    Tone – paler at the background and stronger at the front
     

    NB ~ Wendy believes that the best Raw Umber for colour is the cheapest. 
    Cheaper paints tend to be more opaque.   Wendy often uses Naples Yellow for skies but this is an opaque and not good for mixing.
